How to Leave an Unhealthy Relationship

You can easily fall in love at first sight, but leaving a relationship is not always so easy. Any relationship can be damaged or ruined when one partner is no longer happy or satisfied with the other partner. However, you should also understand that every relationship has its own ups and downs, and you should be prepared to deal with any problems and continue your relationship. Still, there may be instances where you have to leave the relationship. If you are in that situation, here are a few tips for you.

  •   Be very clear and firm about your decision. Remind yourself that you have made the right decision for both of you. Keeping a journal listing the unhealthy factors about your relationship will make your decision easier.
  • Don’t simply start ignoring the other person or leave the relationship without telling him/her. Yes, it is an uncomfortable and very difficult thing to do, but, talk to your partner in person and explain why you are leaving the relationship. Breaking up over the phone is not a good way, unless you expect some physical abuse from your partner.
  •  If you expect your partner to create big problems or resort to physical abuse, choose a public place to break up with him/her. Be very brief about your decision and make it very clear that you are not ready for a second chance. For safety, you can also phone your family members or close friends to inform them of your decision and tell them where you are going.
  •  Never blame your partner or yourself for the mistakes that happened in your relationship. Don’t get emotional, but be firm about your decision. Never give your partner the opportunity to apologize and win you back.
  • Lastly, if you have decided to leave the relationship, it’s better to cut yourself off from your partner completely. Even if you want to remain friends with your partner, it will be easier if you try later, once your emotional bond has decreased.
