What is a Codependent Relationship?

A codependent relationship is the outcome of a dysfunctional relationship, wherein one person in the relationship has become extremely dependent on the other. Codependency in a relationship results from the behavioral and emotional pattern of a dysfunctional relationship. The dominant partner encourages the dependence of the other person to gain control over him or her.

The Merriam Webster dictionary describes codependency as “a psychological condition or a relationship in which a person is controlled or manipulated by another who is affected with a pathological condition such as an addiction.”

Significant Traits of Codependents:

A desire to control over the people around them is one of the significant traits of codependents. Fear of abandonment, lack of self-esteem and a desire to fulfill the other partner’s need are some of the significant traits of being codependent. To understand the codependent relationship’s dynamics, first one should understand the common symptoms of codependent relationships.

Codependent Relationship Symptoms:

Symptoms of codependent relationships include controlling behavior, distrust and a tendency to put your needs and wants before others. This is usually accompanied by feelings of being trapped, clinical depression and constant frustration. Other symptoms include:

  • Finding difficulty in making decisions
  • Problems with intimacy
  • Perfectionism
  • Distrust toward others
  • Difficulty in expressing your thoughts and feelings
  • Avoiding emotional problems
  • Fear of rejection
  • Lack of self-confidence, low self esteem
  • Seeking constant recognition and approval
  • Constant vigilance and excessive care-taking
  • Stress related health problems
  • Always worrying about other people’s feelings and reactions
  • Obsessed with fixing and helping needy people
  • Guilty feelings for no reason

Causes of Codependency Relationships

  • Family problems or parental issues during childhood. Lack of care, attention and love during childhood can be one of the main causes of codependence in a relationship. Receiving too much attention from and being spoiled by parents can be another cause of codependent relationships.
  • Traumatic events like the death of a parent, divorce of parents, mental health problems like depression, physical and emotional abuse and sexually abusive relationships can be other causes of codependent relationships.
