How to Build Trust in a Relationship

In any relationship, the key to having healthy intimacy is trust. To be able to connect well with your partner and increase intimacy, you need to work on building trust between your partner and you. But trusting someone is easier on paper than it is in real life. The underlying fears of opening up, being hurt, or not being understood by your partner can have a negative impact on your trust-based relationship. So, put all your inhibitions and fears aside and follow these few simple tips to build trust in your relationship.

Tips for Building Trust in a Relationship

Here are a few simple tips to help you gain your partner’s trust.

Know Yourself:

The first step towards forming strong trust is to get to know yourself and make sure that your partner knows about you too. Until and unless you are comfortable with yourself, you cannot expect your partner to have more faith in you than you do in yourself.

Respect:

A relationship without respect is a relationship without trust. Both respect and trust are interrelated; without the two, a relationship will eventually fail. But first, it is very important that you respect yourself.  When you respect yourself, it makes it easy for others to trust and respect you.

Pay Attention to Your Actions:

Like they say, actions speak louder than words.  Every time you give your word, make sure you follow up and do what you said you would do. When you match your words with your actions, it becomes easier for your partner to trust you.

Face Your Problems:

When there are problems in your relationship, don’t shy away from them. If you face the situation and solve the problem head-on with your partner, then trusting becomes easy. When you run away from your problems, it puts a damper on your relationship.

Reason:

At times, all your partner needs is a simple reason to trust you unconditionally. Make sure you give your partner that. Be open, be honest, share your feelings and plans for the future, or just share your day-to-day activities. Being open about what you’re doing will definitely help you build trust in a relationship.

Adjustment:

Show your partner that when a situation arises, you can adjust your needs and can make accommodations for your partner’s needs.

Apart from these tips, another important key to building trust in a relationship is to talk about everything with your partner, both good and bad, not just about your problems.
